Once upon a time Dolly and her kids were at a Michael's store. Katelyn, who was about to turn six, saw a pan for a flower-shaped cake there. She asked, "Mommy, can you make this cake for my birthday?" to which Dolly responded "Ummm... no". It was just too big a challenge.
But in this same trip to the same Michael's store, Dolly discovered that a cake class was being offered. The level one class was to begin in just a few weeks. And you could bring a friend for free. This was a deal that Dolly could not pass up.
So Dolly called up her friends. She called them all (and Dolly does have quite a few friends!). But none of them were able to take the class with her.
Undaunted, Dolly began to consider relatives. She immediately eliminated her mother and mother-in-law. And she eliminated all of her local sisters-in-law as well. You cannot have one of them showing up to the same family event with a better cake! She knew better than to ask her brother or brothers-in-law. So she was still stuck without anyone to take the class with her.
Luckily for Dolly, Rebekah came to the rescue. Rebekah is Dolly's husband's brother's girlfriend. Did you follow that? Good. Rebekah was not quite family, and she was certainly a friend. Rebekah agreed to take the class with Dolly.
Dolly and Rebekah had no idea what they were about to get into!
The first level class was a four week whirlwind. Far from the cake baking and frosting making class they expected, they immediately began to learn about layering cakes, using different frosting consistencies, and making different types of flowers. They also learned how to make frosting without the need to clean the ceiling afterwards! You can see Dolly's level one final project here.
Having enjoyed the first level class, Dolly and Rebekah decided to take the second level class together. In another four week adventure, they learned the art of making more kind of flowers, creating candy objects and shapes, and doing a basket weave finish. It was at this point that Dolly and Rebekah got creative and began to create cakes beyond the scope of the class. You can see Dolly's level two final project here.
Having learned so much, and desiring to learn more, Dolly and Rebekah then decided to take the third level class. In this class they learned the secrets to tiered cakes. This excited Dolly's husband, who is really quite fond of tiered cakes with water fountains in them! After another four week marathon they had graduated, and set out to make cakes in the real world. You can see Dolly's level three final project here.
The rest of the history is still being made. Dolly has enjoyed making these cakes so much, that she had this website created. As long as Dolly continues to make cakes, Dolly will be sure to post pictures of them here!
